If you're the kind of person who can't function without a morning coffee, brace yourself—your daily caffeine fix might soon become more expensive. Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, is experiencing a sharp rise in coffee prices, with experts from ABIC (Associação Brasileira da Indústria de Café) warning that prices could increase by 25% in the coming months. This surge is driven by extreme weather conditions, rising global demand, and market speculation, impacting everyone from local farmers to the average person grabbing a cup of coffee between classes or work.
The past few years have posed severe challenges for Brazilian coffee producers. In 2021, for instance, severe frost damaged multiple plantations, and more recently, extreme weather patterns (as many have surely noticed) have disrupted crops. However, this issue extends beyond just supply and demand. The global thirst for coffee continues to rise, particularly in countries like China, increasing competition for Brazil’s exports. To make matters worse, the Brazilian coffee market is grappling with a surge in “fake coffee”—products mixed with fillers like coffee husks and artificial flavors to cut costs—raising concerns about quality and consumer trust.
While some stabilization may occur with the next harvest expected in April or May, a significant price drop is unlikely anytime soon. Given that coffee plays a vital role in Brazil’s economy—accounting for 8.5 billion USD in export revenue—and in our daily routines, it might be time to start budgeting for that morning cup…
