AOC's Perspective of the Israeli-Palestinian Feud

The globally known Israel-Palestine feud has been building up for hundreds of years and is now escalating, especially since unsettled conflicts between the two regions result in constant fighting. Many States and important figures stand divided on this topic, with some sympathizing slightly more for one region of Israel. Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez, also known as AOC, is an American politician currently serving as the US’s representative for New York’s 14th congressional district; she is defending Palestine during these distressing times.

The conflict began soon after World War One, when Britain took control of the area known as Palestine and the region became inhabited by Jews and Arabs. Tension between these two groups escalated when they both saw Israel as their ancestral home, meaning that the two ethnicities wanted to claim the land. Hatred between them and against the British rule grew: After the denial of British proposals on how to divide the territory, colonial rulers left, and many wars followed.

In 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank along with other areas, while Palestinian refugees lived mostly in Gaza and were not allowed to go back to their homes. This was due to the Israeli belief that their return would threaten Jerusalem's existence as a Jewish State. Israel claimed the whole of Jerusalem as its capital, whilst Palestinians claimed East Jerusalem as their future capital. Palestinians think that the Jews living in East Jerusalem are illegal under international law, although Israel denies this.

Currently, Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, rule the Gaza region. As violence increases, Palestinians state that they are suffering because of Israeli restrictions, whilst Israel claims that it is only acting to protect itself. The threatened eviction of Palestinian families in East Jerusalem is just one of the causes of raising anger.

Regarding this issue, the USA plans to remain on Israel’s side. Biden has publicly expressed how he will continue his policy of the US support for a two-state solution. This solution includes separate Israel and Palestine states.

Israel is the United States' closest strategic partner in the Middle East, especially as both nations worry about Iran’s nuclear developments and its support for militarists such as the Hamas. Shared interests have led the USA to pledge help towards Israel in the existence of threats in the area: the USA promises to help Israel in the event of such conflicts by reducing arm sales to other Middle Eastern countries and by providing military assistance to Israel, which it justifies as a recompense for Israeli risks towards peace.

Therefore, even though Israel has been found responsible for killing over 180 Palestinians in the Gaza strip, Biden is still claiming these are acts of self-defence and that Israel has the right to defend itself.

Alessandra Cortez strongly disagrees with the USA's view on this conflict, publicly criticizing Biden's support for Israel during the recent Gaza bombardment. She tweeted a comment calling Israel an “apartheid state”, stating that “apartheid state aren’t democracies”.

Alessandra is a woman of great power and a model of female empowerment across the globe, and she has not hesitated to express her dissatisfaction with the US's aid towards Israel. She believes that the way in which Palestinians are being forced out of the land is unfair, and that the American government is sometimes partial in favour of Jews.

Other progressive women US Representative Rashida Tlaib and Congresswoman Cori Bush have retweeted this statement, adding more importance to the argument while also demonstrating female empowerment.
