UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot to death in Manhattan on December 4th. Five days later, high school valedictorian and Ivy League graduate Luigi Mangione was found in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania with incriminating evidence in his possession, including a firearm believed to be the murder weapon.

Now in custody, the question consuming the media ever since is why would such an intelligent individual, who appeared to have executed a nearly flawless crime, willingly appear in public carrying all the evidence needed to convict him just days after the crime, even as his face was broadcast nationwide as a person of interest? Did Mangione want to be caught? And if so, why?

The Mangione family’s wealth comes from real estate, including nursing homes and hospitals. They were apparently very involved with the healthcare industry and well-known supporters of hospitals in Baltimore, especially Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Some theorists suggest Luigi had an ethical awakening, committing the crime to expose and punish the very industry his family profits from.

Inside Luigi’s backpack, authorities found a handwritten note stating, “frankly, these parasites had it coming”. Shell casings at the crime scene were engraved with the words, “deny”, “defend”, and “depose”, which are known to be the three Ds of insurance – the ways in which insurance companies evade their responsibilities to patients.

As investigators piece together the puzzle, Luigi’s family and close friends remain steadfast in their defense, insisting he is incapable of hurting someone else. Meanwhile, more information about his personal history and viewpoint continues coming to light.
