In recent years, TikTok has gained shocking popularity, captivating millions around the world with its quick videos and creative content. However, the app currently faces a questionable future in the USA as the possibility of it being banned increases.

Congressional debates over the fate of TikTok have intensified, fueled by concerns over national security and data privacy. Information about the app's users is tied to China, raising alarm amongst lawmakers who fear that user data could be exploited for the wrong purposes. The recently approved legislation which seeks to restrain Chinese influence has only added fuel to the fire, sparking calls for action against TikTok.

National security remains one of the biggest threats when it comes to TikTok. Many argue that, because it is owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance, TikTok poses a significant risk to American interests and security.  China has a history of data surveillance and censorship, which raises concern that the app is being used for espionage or propaganda. These fears have pushed some politicians to advocate for a complete ban of the app, on the grounds that it is a necessary step to protect information from falling into the wrong hands.

The economic effects of a TikTok ban are widespread. Millions of content creators and influencers whose main platform is TikTok would see their livelihoods threatened. Advertisers would also be afflicted with the loss of such a powerful platform for marketing.

A ban on TikTok would undoubtedly affect not only the United States but the whole world.  For millions of users, the app represents more than just a source of entertainment—it is a community, a creative outlet, and a means of self-expression. A ban would end the connections with users around the world, leaving a void that may not easily be filled. As policymakers weigh their options, they must consider the human cost of their decisions.
