By: V. Toledo Artificial intelligence has become central to modern progress but imagining its absence highlights both its impact and its limitations. Before AI, scientific research depended entirely on human reasoning, observation, and manual analysis. This meant that discoveries were slower and often limited by time and resources. In a world without AI, this earlier model would still dominate, resulting in a much more gradual innovation across STEM fields.
The absence of AI would significantly affect fields such as medicine, engineering, and even space exploration. Tools like AlphaFold have accelerated complex research, particularly in understanding proteins and developing treatments. Similarly, during NASA’s Artemis II mission, AI-assisted systems helped monitor spacecraft operations and astronaut safety. Without AI, missions of this scale would require far more manual calculations and constant monitoring, increase complexity, and slow progress. In medicine, research would also take much longer, delaying advancements and reducing overall efficiency. At the same time, a world without AI presents certain advantages. Before AI, decision-making was less dependent on algorithms and more grounded in human judgment. There were fewer concerns about issues such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, or over-reliance on automated systems. Creativity and problem-solving were driven solely by human effort, which could encourage originality and critical thinking in ways that differ from today’s technology-assisted approaches. Overall, without AI, progress across all fields would be slower, more limited, and less efficient. Although innovation would continue, many scientific and technological advancements would take significantly longer to achieve, showing that AI has not only accelerated progress but has also become essential to the modern-day world.
