Portuguese Literature SL

Portuguese Literature is a subject for anyone who loves to read books- but it is more than just that. We often find ourselves discussing polemic issues raised by one of our books, be it feminism, poverty or the importance of education.

This is not a subject for those who just like to read- you have to be passionate about it and understand that this subject requires a lot of writing. You are constantly analysing passages, and taking notes which will later be required for you to write essays.

In terms of grading, there are multiple assessments for the IB:
  1. Oral presentation about a work you have studied in class.
  2. Written Task (Coursework)- 1,200-1,500-word essay answering a question you have come up on your own.
  3. IOC- externally assessed oral presentation.
  4. Paper 1- analysis of a text or poem you have not previously seen.
  5. Paper 2- analysis of two texts you have previously studied, answering the question provided (must memorize multiple quotes before the exam in order to get good grades).

It is important to note that, while Portuguese Literature is one of my favourite subjects, it is very demanding, even at standard level. It is not only about reading the books, but analysing and studying them thoroughly. If you are interested in the subject, and passionate about reading, this is a sure choice for you. But be aware that it requires a lot of dedication and time inside as well as outside the classroom.

It is definitively one of my favourite subjects and I recommend it to anyone who loves to read, analyse and learn about Portuguese literature and culture.
