Geography HL is by far my favorite subject in the IB. If you are looking for a course to enhance your knowledge about this ever-changing world in an entertaining and interactive manner, geography is the right subject for you.

The transition from geography IGSCE to geography HL was the smoothest one yet, as the IGCSE geography course provides a strong foundation of knowledge that facilitates the transition to the IB. The course has many similar topics and the test is laid out in a similar way; however the topics are studied in greater depth and there is a greater number of case studies required.

The course incorporates global issues such as sustainability, resource consumption, population growth and climate change, all of which are extremely relevant in today’s world. Honestly, this course put me up to date with pertinent news and events around the globe, like politics, natural disasters and distinct cultures.

If you would like to take geography, keep in mind that the HL and SL courses are pretty similar, the only difference is that the HL course requires two extra topics. However, I still believe workload and content are not be drastically changed between the two levels.

Other than the topics from the syllabus, the classes itself are as enjoyable as they are dynamic, where we usually have various open debates. However, what really made me appreciate geography was the class’ learning environment; the positive input from all students and especially the consideration Mr. Almeida has for his pupils, making lessons entertaining and educational altogether. He is also very supportive; helping students get the most out of geography in and out of class.

I strongly recommend geography HL; it is my fun and relaxing subject in this stressful IB life.
