The 2020 futsal season started at full steam, as the Varsity boys' team got straight into action following the winter holidays. The first matches have come to an end, and here are some of the highlights so far.

For our first match of the season, we played an away game at Graded school. The short time to prepare, and the lack of synchrony, were crucial factors determining the result of our first match.  Regardless of the conditions, the boys imposed themselves on the court, which provided them a 2 – 1 lead just before halftime. At this point, however, their lacking fitness conditions proved essential in causing the boy’s game to crumble apart. Tiredness induced silly mistakes proved fatal in causing us to blow our lead, and the whole game, leading to a 9 - 2 final result.

Although disappointing and disheartening, the result masked the real events of the match. This gave a sense of hope for the boys who were confident they could revert this performance in the next game. The following game we hosted the PACA warriors, a team that had won all their games to this point. Motivated by the previous result, the team tried their best at regaining their confidence and leaving home with a win. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t enough as they were once again defeated by a wide margin; 5 – 2. Nonetheless, once again, the scoreboard didn’t justify the boys’ performance. A significant improvement in their performance could be seen, and the number of chances created was one of the main highlights of their game.

The final two games clearly evidenced the team’s difficulty in making use of opportunities and exposed our carelessness in conceding silly goals. The goals conceded in the initial minutes of the games proved crucial as we ran against the clock in the finishing minutes, making use of any attempt to secure a draw. The last game, especially, had an extra factor weighing in, as we had to win to maintain our chances at reaching the finals. Nonetheless, as each game progressed, the development of team spirit and individual confidence could vividly be seen, as each day the boys played better and better.

The boy’s season so far has certainly been a big setback, especially for a team determined to forget the previous year’s results. However, their determination and commitment to improving every single game must be acknowledged and applauded.

Till the next review!
