By: A. Jafet Who said that old tv shows were out? Gilmore Girls is one of the many series that proves this statement wrong. Gilmore Girls, released back in October 5th 2000, where most of the senior school wasn’t even born yet, still proves to be a top - notch, light hearted tv series. Having an 8.1 rating on IMDB, it has received nominations and awards, a few being Golden Globe nominations, Emmy Awards and quite some Teen Choice Awards. If you still haven’t watched it, here are some reasons why you should watch it, and obsess over it:
This is one of those tv shows, where you binge watch all 7 seasons in one month, and talk about it for the following year. Based in a small, lovable town in Connecticut, the series follows the Gilmore family, more exclusively Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, mother and daughter, around their town, doing their everyday chores and necessities. Rory goes to school, while Lorelai goes to work. We are presented with some quite eccentric characters. These, with their individual role within the story, help to shape up, the story of Stars Hollow, the town in which they live in, as well as their personal lives. The show has as its main themes: family, love and friendship. It explores these, by creating a very distinctive storyline. Lorelai at the age of 16 got pregnant, to a character which is later presented in the show (no spoilers), it is then that we are able to see how Lorelai and Rory have a very particular relationship. This also leads to us to meeting Lorelai’s parents, Richard and Emily Gilmore, a wealthy couple, desperate to be part of their granddaughters life. We also follow Rory’s academic career, and agitated teenage love life and by the end you won’t even know who is the perfect guy for Rory anymore. This show teaches us the truly value our family, and how to appreciate every single thing that has been done to help us, no matter who did it, or whats your relationship with the person. It also helps us to recognize that family is forever, and that sooner or later, you might as well love your entire family, and have Friday night dinners, am I right? ( Watch Gilmore Girls and I promise, you’ll understand this reference). It also teaches you to work hard and follow your dreams, as it eventually pays off. Keep around people who challenge you, and inspire you to work harder. Accept change, and know that it is normal to struggle with change. But most importantly, to always talk to someone, and express what you are feeling. The final reason to why you should definitely watch it, is because: there is a revival. Yes, you heard it correctly. When you finish all of the 7 seasons and wonder what you are going to do with your life next, don’t worry, Gilmore Girls is back. You can still fan girl over your favourite characters. In the revival, all of the characters are still there, they just aged about 10 years, but that’s fine, cause you continue to love them. The story shows how every single character has moved on with their life, and Rory, to some extent is still stuck in the past. If a revival wasn’t a good enough reason to watch it, then this one will make you want to watch it right now: all of its 7 seasons plus its revival are available on Netflix, yes it’s true, check it for yourself. So, if you want to cry of laughter, but also weep of sadness, it is completely normal I promise, then be sure to watch this show. You will not be disappointed. As Lorelai and Rory would say, ‘it’s a lifestyle, it’s a religion.’ Image from: tumblr_ofm1nnSq7C1rjc98wo7_500.gif
