By H. Gullo BMW has just created the world’s most fabulous getaway car. It is called the BMW IX Flow, and it uses state-of-the-art technology to change its colour flawlessly. It was announced at CES 2022, and although it’s far from production, it’s an excellent project for all cars enthuasiasts out there to know about.
The German automobile company was able to invent such a car thanks to E Ink technology. It is the same tech used in E-Readers, such as the Kindle. It can switch between two colours and all tones between white and black. On the other hand, Stella Clarke, the main research engineer in this project, said that the two colours could be chosen and suited for the customer’s taste. How does E Ink work? BMW’s colour-changing SUV is covered in electrophoretic paper with millions of ink microcapsules. When stimulated by electrical signals controlled by a smartphone, the external part switches pigments and the electrical field brings the ink to the front of the paper. It is also able to have stripes or other patterns on the exterior. The best thing is that no energy is used for this process, since the ink is already in the vehicle. What car is it? The car is the same as the BMW IX. It is a mid-sized SUV; it seats five people and is 100% electric. It has an enormous 15-inch front display and a minimalistic interior design. From what we know, this car is far from ready to launch, but this is what we know about the world’s first colour-changing car for now.
