By: I.Fischer When you think of old songs, chances are, you probably think of jazz. You might even be asking yourself, is jazz still, somehow relevant or even important in the music industry? Well, I’m here to discuss how jazz has contributed to shaping many genres that exist today. Many elements of jazz have contributed to the production of other genres. Notably hip hop, for example, uses samples from jazz music and then puts a spin on it by adding loops and layers of production. Much like in jazz music, improvisation is a huge part of hip hop. Another genre that exemplifies the over branching influence of jazz in the music industry is rock. Extending chords and adding chord tones, typical characteristics of jazz music, are elements that were incorporated into rock music. If you think pop music hasn’t been influenced by jazz, think again. As many early backup players had originally done jazz music, a certain quality of jazz was attributed to songs due to the specific arrangements and solos that were improvised and tweaked. One in all, I hope this article has changed your perspective about jazz, and that you’re now aware of how impactful jazz has been in the creation of other genres and in molding their distinct characteristics. So, to answer the initial question, jazz is very relevant in the music industry.
