The unspoken rivalry: Gen Z vs the Millennials by M. E. Musa

It seems wrong to think about such a rivalry, right? Especially, because you are part of the generation that your parent, grandparent, teacher, and favourite celebrity probably isn’t. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not talking about a rivalry like the Los Angeles Lakers with the Boston Celtics. Or of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. In this rivalry you don’t or never will have to choose between your favourite basketball team or drink. Generation Z and the Millennials are rivals in accepting the change in Era.
One of the greatest things in life is watching someone you’ve known as a baby grow, develop, form opinions, open their eyes to the world, and discover the many things life must teach one. But in some ways both generations still struggle to accept the change in the way life works today, and how it was in the past. In the foreseeable future the things in the world we all live in will be new for us. No matter your age, a new generation will master technology and modernity of the way we live.
From going to payphones to call your loved ones, to writing letters, to handwriting every single piece of academic work, to having a backpack full of physical books, to taking long walks to see each other face to face; has now changed. Not for the better. Not for the worse. But for some reason this change has created a form of rivalry.
How many times have your parents told you to leave your phones, go outside, go for a walk, or even simply just forget everything and breath? How many times have you tried to teach someone the perks of social media communication or how to place an order online? In reality, it is a rivalry of customs against traditions.
Just remember that what is new for you will soon become old. So, trust me, the next time someone from the Millennial generation shows you a piece of clothing they wore several years ago, don’t discard it. Maybe it will be the next biggest trend. As George Gaylord Simpson once said; “Evolution is amazingly versatile in adapting materials at hand to other uses”.
In the end, I guess the point of this article was me trying to figure out what will come next.
